Book Arts and Printmaking
Book arts and printmaking are both very accessible ways of making art and of self-expression. They can each be developed to great heights of sophisticated application whilst also remaining reliant upon a set of fundamental principles that can be learned by anyone. They are each completely separate forms of arts practice yet each can benefit from combining with the other.
The need to communicate through image and/or text, in some kind of form, began in ancient times and I think perhaps current book arts practitioners are still driven by that same urge.
Most book arts naturally consider words and text as part of the developmental process, along with imagery, texture, colour, structure and form. The early forms of manuscript writing by monks and clerics gave birth to the legacy of wildly diverse forms of present day contemporary works. The earthy properties of clay, wood, stone, bark and fibre are linked with pigments to produce printed and expressive forms.
I like to think that something of that lineage is at the heart of everything I make.
